KA-BAR US Army Fighting/Utility Knife Straight Edge Review

Although perhaps not as handy as one of the multi-tools, this knife inspires user confidence. The blade is thick and the steel is incredibly hard.
For example, I was unsatisfied with the sharpening done at the factory. The edge is a little rough out of the box. I made the mistake of trying to smooth the edge using a whetstone. After about a half hour, the blade still looked the same as it did when I started. Man, that's hard steel! Finally, I took it to the guy who runs the knife shop at the Ft. Bragg mini-mart, and he put a beautifully smooth and very sharp edge on it using a table grinder, for only $1.
Unlike a lot of other fighting-style knives, the tang of the blade comes all the way through the handle, making it even stronger. Some people might say I ruined it by having it sharpened, but I don't care. I'm not a collector, I'm a user.

Case Cutlery 031 Case Slimline Trapper Pocket Knife with Chrome Vanadium Blade, Yellow Synthetic Review

Case Cutlery 031 Case Slimline Trapper Pocket Knife with Chrome Vanadium Blade, Yellow Synthetic

I have had this knife for about 8 months now. Bought it for $25 and I must say this is by far the best knife I have ever bought at this price range. I have collected pocket knives since I was a kid and, until recently, always just bought the $25 and under knives.... all of which were cheaply made, poor material quality, and all around junk. So I went into the knife shop and told the clerk I was looking for a REAL knife, something that would last and was built to actually work. I told him I was willingly to bump my price range up higher than usual and he told me this was not necessary. He then walked over to the Case display and pulled out this particular model and a couple others. He told me they were all under $30 and would live to see my grand children if used properly. I chose this model because the contour lines of the handle are really aesthetically appealing and super comfortable both in my pocket and in my hand...also because the blade is a perfect size and shape for an all around utility knife in my studio. When I got home with the knife I was immediately impressed at how sharp it was.... I'm talking shaving sharp. After a month or so of use the blade was getting a bit dull, as expected, so I sharpened it again. I was really surprised at how incredibly easily this blade took an edge after just a handful of passes on the crock sticks. It literally took just a minute or so to get this knife sharp enough again to shave with. My only concern with this knife was the durability of the synthetic handle material... so far I have been very impressed. I've dropped the knife multiple times on rock, concrete, and asphalt and there are no dings or scratches beyond just tiny micro scratches that come normally with wear.
If you are ever looking for a reliable, quality, long lasting knife that isn't going to clean your wallet then BUY THIS KNIFE. Now it is not a big knife so I would not recommend it for big jobs like chopping or cutting large pieces of wood but it has served me well sharpening pencils and charcoal, cutting paper and fishing line, opening various packaging, cutting string etc. Overall an amazing product, well built, super comfortable, VERY sharp!

High build quality, no light shining thru the scales. Case has gotten their quality back up to par, and being a CV knife, this is a "user" knife.

I bought this knife to carry around in my pocket while working around the house and in the woods. My brother really likes Case knives so I figured I'd give them a try. The current knives that I carry are smaller being about 2 1/2 inches long and I thought that this knife would be a more appropriate size at about 3 1/2 inches long closed. The knife is very well constructed. The finish is beautiful and the bone sides are perfectly fitted to the end plates. I went back and forth for some time whether or not to get the Chrome vanadium blades ore the stainless steel. I finally settled on the Chrome vanadium figuring that I would weekly keep the knife oiled. So far, I've had the knife for about 2 or 3 months and I've seen no signs of tarnishing or blade discoloration. My only concern is that the knife looks too good for everyday carry. I didn't know how I'd like the red bone finish but it looks beautiful.
I highly recommend the for those looking for an everyday carry knife that is constructed well and made by a great company.

My first sodbuster was the large model, about 30 years ago. It was a little large for my pocket, but what I like about these knives is the fact that the steel can take a seriously sharp edge. As a woodworker a steels ability to sharpen well is more important then how long it will keep the edge. Case has picked the right steel for my use. I use the Sodbuster Jr. now. I have two of them; one of which I custom ground for woodworking in tight spots. They last forever.

Finest pocket knife I have ever owned and in 52 years of virtually living in the great outdoors I have tried them all. I bought one of these locking trappers when they first came out and it has been awesome. I just bought 4 more as Christmas presents for my brothers. If you want a stainless knife go find one you like and buy it... If you want a knife that will quickly take a razors edge and hold it for a long time even under adversity, buy a knife that the blade will rust/tarnish... These knife blades are made out of Chrome/Vanadium/Carbon steel and yes they will tarnish/rust. Case makes the finest blade steel in existence these days. I'm not a salesman for Case or anyone else. I can tell you this from experience, you can't find a finer knife made to old world standards of material and workmanship as you find in Case XX knives. MD
