(More customer reviews)After purchasing my first house, I replaced the two deadbolts in the house with double cylinder Kwikset deadbolts. Both deadbolts were keyed the same from the factory.
Installation of the locks was simple (I did not even refer to the directions until after I was finished). Installation was only about 10 minutes (including removing the old lock).
The deadbolts did their job. All keys worked great in both locks, just as they are supposed to. However, after about 1 year, I was having difficulties with the keys getting stuck in the locks. The locks would get hard to turn and the keys difficult to remove. I had to pull the key out with a pair of channel locks only one or two uses after noticing the lock was sticking slightly. The problem was easily fixed with a little lubricant. Eventually, I broke a key off in the lock trying to remove it after sticking. Admittedly, I did not lubricate the locks every six months as the manufacturer recommends.
I had no problem with the finish on the locks. They look as good as the day I bought them. I did mix Schage and Kwikset components on the door and the Antique Brass finish from the two companies is definitely not the same color. The difference in the shades is tolerable, but it is obviously different.
Kwikset was cheaper than Schlage when I purchased the deadbolt. If you are a little short of money, the Kwikset deadbolt does the job, just be sure to remember to lubricate the lock twice a year to avoid problems. If you can afford the extra $10 or so, I'd recommend buying the Schlage brand instead.
