(More customer reviews)This genre of bath fan is a pleasant change from the past boring ivory plastic variety. Having a fan / light with the brushed nickel finish certainly helped with coordination of all our bath fixtures. It is indeed quiet and effective at performing its role.
The reason for my average rating is with regards to the installation due to the poorly conceived design of the housing. Style points OK. Performance quite good. Installation lousy.
Most modern electrical devices intended to be installed in ceiling bays between joists (can lights, older NuTone / Braun fans) come with a pair of neat devices called crossbars. These physically mount to the joists allowing fixture placement virtually anywhere along and between the space. Additionally & even more so important, the installer has a choice of which direction to place the exhaust port. This fan has to mount directly to the joist or a built-up bit of cobbled in framing. This severely limits placement of the unit & effective routing of the exhaust.
In my case I had open framing to work with, but the placement was less than optimal. Additionally I had to put a 180ยบ turn in my exhaust duct - this is undesireable as it limits the effeciency of the exhaust fan. The angled mounting screws they direct you to use are cheap, strip easily and pull the can out of position when you tighten them up. I decided to use the 4 ears on the exterior of the can; retrofit installations do not have this option.
Also noted as an earlier reviewer, the housing can is really flimsy sheet metal. (Mine was damaged during shipping.) After I mounted it to the joist (nice wide & flat NW douglas fir) without the silly angled mounting screws, the housing distorted making refitting the fan assembly into the housing a tricky affair.
It did go back together and works.
I am an experienced DIY home remodeler and quite handy. I would likely not recommend this unit to the casual DIY person who do not want to invest the better part of an afternoon fooling around to install this unit. What should have been a 30 minute job for me, including the wiring took over 2 hours.
Look for a fan that suits your taste with a better mounting system. I would suspect that all of these "designer" style fans from the leading brands are contracted to the same Chinese manufacturer & likely have the same issue.
