When the inner spring broke inside my older Kwikset knob, I bought this one to replace it. Both were the same style, with globe shaped balls for handles. The size of the balls shrunk since my original ones were made, and so did the size of the escutcheon plates. Having smaller balls might be merely aesthetic, but I have a set of double doors with a dummy set of handles right next to this set. Having uneven lopsided looking balls makes the doors look bad. The problem with the escutcheon plates is that there are rings around them on the door from where the larger ones had made contact on the old set.
There is also a change in the center rod that is used to turn the locking mechanism. The previous models had a metal shaft, and the new one has a plastic one. I don't know if having a firmer metal shaft and larger balls for handles improves the product itself, but it's clear that they were trying to cheapen it.
Another difference is the striker. The striker plate looks identical, but the striker itself has an added plastic strip. It looked as if it should have been an improvement, and since the striker will go in and out of the hole many times over its lifetime, you want it to be smooth and not have a friction problem. That was not the case. I tried lubrication, but WD-40 did nothing to help. I ended up putting the old striker back. The old one went in and out smoothly repeatedly without needing extra lubrication, and twisting the knob got the striker to retract smoothly. But twisting the knob on the new one made the striker jumpy, sort of holding back, and then letting go suddenly.
All of this is more of a problem when replacing an older set of knobs with a new one. If you are using this on a new installation, you might not care about the size or the firmness of the feel that the old one had.
Another difference is the center part that you twist to lock the door. You want the metal ridge in the middle to point straight up to get everything to lock firmly in place. My old one had a larger center part that you could get a thumb and two fingers around, but the new one is about the size of a fingertip. This one is likely to punch a hole in some walls, if there is not a proper door stop. It's also a cosmetic issue if it does not match the other handles.
I ended up using this on a lesser used bedroom door, and taking the one from that other door to give me something to match the knobs on the door next to it.
