(More customer reviews)It's not exactly easy to tell the various lava lamp suppliers apart--they all claim to be "the" only authentic high-quality purveyor out there--but Amazon should move on from whoever is selling them their lava lamps at the moment. I'm looking at my second consecutive opaque red lava lamp as I type this. There's almost certainly some wax melting in there, but it's not as though I can see it.
Lava lamps being cloudy right out of the box is an either/or thing, so if you get lucky and the "clear" liquid is even remotely clear, I'm sure it's a fine lamp. But the odds aren't great, as you can tell if you look for the word "cloudy" in these other reviews.
