The hinge looks good in the photos, but it's rattly with with plenty of wiggle, made of cheap metal, and not particularly well-crafted. The seat and lid are at liberty to play to and fro, and there is no tightness in the mechanism whatsoever. Also, the hinge attaches to the top of the rim with spongy washers that get partially squished into the holes. The washers protect the porcelain from the metal bolts, but surely spongy stuff is not a good idea when it comes to longevity and cleaning. Some kind of flanged bushing made of nylon would have been better. Installation note: You have to tighten until the washers squish enough for the hinges to level properly and for the back bumpers to rest on the toilet rim. Otherwise weight will be applied where the hinge attaches to the seat, and the screws will eventually pull out.
Finish is extremely high gloss, and there were no defects that I noticed.
Seat and lid seem very well made and both appear to be wood. The Amazon description says "solid wood toilet seat," but nothing about the lid, and elsewhere says, "Molded wood, metal and plastic construction." Either that's a mistake or I am being fooled by some new kind of dust and glue concoction. Well, I'm not about to saw the thing in half to find out.
The packaging itself says "Designer Wood," "Decorative Wood," "Premium Wood Toilet Seat," and, best of all, "Solid Oak Wood Seat," which reassures us that oak is indeed wood, and wood is indeed solid, and even, perhaps, that oak is one of the most solid of woods, but at the same time is a reminder that in this cynical, dishonest, and dumbed-down age "Oak" alone is no longer sufficient to convey these simple ideas. Anyway, that's a lot of about wood, but still no mention of the lid.
Amazon gives a bunch of confusing dimensions. Here's what matters: From the center of the bolts to the front edge of seat is a standard 16.5". The outside dimensions of the seat are slightly under 15.75" x 14.5". The centers of the bolts are a standard 5.5" apart. The four bumpers under the seat are about 2" wide, which should be enough to accommodate (ha ha) minor variations in toilet shape.
The underside of the lid features an appalling plastic medallion proclaiming "Comfort Seat." It looks as if it is permanently attached, but it peels off with a bit of fingernailing.
I half expected the seat to be dark brown so that wasn't a big deal, but the hinge is a disappointment. I would not buy this product again, even though it is somewhat redeemed by the installation instructions which feature two simple diagrams followed by a photo of the installed seat captioned "Enjoy!"
